Time to play
after an extensive playground research in berlin, technology testing i developed several concepts, taking care of the issues i was confronted with when thinking about the real locations. the perfect location is not found yet but there definitely are some nice ones.
feedback to these concepts and ideas about locations in berlin always welcome!
Indirect Interaction (pdf)
having very simple indirect input (i.e. light sources, mirrors etc) which project onto a wall. through this, a very simple core-mechanic is given. the small projections would be augmented by a digital projection. game-like things would be possible.
A virtual facade (pdf)
berlin has many "brandmauern", these are walls which remained from a destroyed building (WWII). these walls don't have any windows and it would be nice to use these for a projection. in this concept a virtual facade is projected on the wall. each playground device controls one person in one room (window). if two devices are used the image scans through the building and shows the way the people affect each other by their activities in their little living space.
lots of space for playful, comical narratives. i can also imagine this connected to the sound/music output which i plan to prototype anyway (the sound in this building makes a song)...mmmh
mauerpark swings (pdf)
this is a concept especially contextualized for the nice swings (i think there's 6 of them) which are located in the mauerpark, berlin prenzlauer berg. the concept is almost non-digital as there's just a projector and a lever-sensor attached to each swing. if a person swings high enough the lever opens the projector's blend. this projects onto a long graffiti wall which is adjacent to the swings. nice: a "real" public space (they are extensively used already). a type of play which remains device-inherent but still might bring surprising interactions (6 swings, 6 projections, very human movement)
Day and Night (pdf)
day and night is a poetic, artistic approach. i've been thinking a lot about: why are adults not playing anymore? and if we are, how do we play? the idea would be to track the movements the kids are doing at night, playing freely, and using this movement in projections (or something similar) which show our playing these days: playing with/in relationships, power, self representation...
